Going backpackers!

The other day I went to Borneo Backpackers for dinner, yes, they have some sort of a cafe AKA Borneo 1945 Musem Kopitiam there. I’ve been there a couple of times actually BUT since that I haven’t blog anything about it yet. So just to share with you all out there while promoting Sabah Backpackers for those who are NOT familiar with this place.

---

Advertorial:
Centrally located in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, Borneo Backpackers has already attracted the attention of discerning travellers from around the world.

Rooms available include airconditioned or fan Large Dormitory (10 Beds), Medium Dormitory (4 - 6 Beds) and Private Rooms. Each room has small storage compartment for personal items and has a fan or is air-conditioned. Rates from US$7 per person per night.

The ground floor of Borneo Backpackers has been converted into a local style post war coffee shop completed with antique furniture and traditional local foods, named "Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam".

On the walls inside and outside are displayed wartime photographs of Australians and British soldiers, local unsung heroes as well as replicas of war memorial plaques in Sabah.

Outside the building are also displayed on its wall two plaques put up by Sabah Tourism Board and the Australian Embassy in 1995 of the significance of this historical building.

---

If you wanna know more about this place go visit their site: www.borneobackpackers.com

*Behind of scene - the "charcoal bread" counter

Never heard of charcoal bread?

* Take a closer look on the mysterious "charcoal bread"

Aha! it NOT your typical looking bread. Wonder how do they serve it?

No worries, I got that covered..

-

-

Tadaaa!

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing charcoal with peanutbutter

Actually it's tasted like the normal bread. Guess the only special thing is the shape.

*This is.. erm..

Seriously, I've forgotten what was it in the sacks.. opps!

*The beef stew rice that I was having - totally yummilious!

After makan, I continue to take somemore pictures of that place.
Wanted to checkout the accommodation they had.

The accommodations were upstairs, you can't go upstairs from the Kopitiam.
So I went from the other way, from outside..

* Classic looking building

Can see Borneo Backpacker's sign board? Cannot ar?

*Okay there you go, clearer look!

Post Lent Entry

This is another late entry ( Yes, I know. I've not been blogging much lately. So, sue me! )

I remembered in my previous Prawn vs. Monkey entry, I told you guys that I’m gonna post up something for Good Friday right? So this is it BUT I’m gonna start from Palm Sunday though.

Palm Sunday

For those non-Christians out there, fyi, “Palm Sunday” is celebrated before Good Friday and it’s a week before Easter Day. According to Wiki, Palm Sunday - is a moveable feast in the church calendar observed by Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christians. It is the Sunday before Easter.

I went to Church of Mary Immaculate (CMI) English mass. Was kinda late that day, and the church was PACKED! Then I saw Bishop John Lee was serving mass! This means the mass will be EXTRA long. Don’t ask why, if bishop is serving it’s always like that. To make the mass EXTRA long, he requested that the gospel to be read full version ( I mean, there was a shorter version BUT he INSISTED the LONGER one. Sigh! ) The readers were confused and they ended up reading the whole chapterWHOLE means: readings NOT only for Palm Sunday but also the readings till Good Friday! Walao wey, if like that does it means that it’s okay for me NOT to go to mass on Good Friday since I’ve already heard the whole reading for it liao? -.-'

*inside of CMI - lots of palms deco for Palm Sunday

----

Good Friday

It’s a public holiday today (yay!) BUT it’s not holiday for FUN, it's a time for us Christian to go to attend Good Friday mass. It’s the day where the BIG GUY ( where as JW put it – “HIS BOSS” ) got crucified on the cross and fasting is a MUST!

Mass ( For St. Simon, yes I know, I’m church hopping, Soo? ) starts at 3pm, so me and Eddy decided to go earlier ( around 1pm ) to get better seat in the church – hopeful wish! When we got there, my gosh… it’s already PACKED! I mean there’s NOT a single seat in the church anymore. Walao wey, it’s NOT even 1:30pm! I wonder what time did those people reach. Feeling bit disappointed since we made an effort to come early BUT still HAVE TO SIT OUTSIDE OF THE CHURH! Sigh!

*No choice BUT have to sit OUTSIDE of the church! Argh..

I thought it’s gonna be a HOT afternoon but it RAINED quite a bit that afternoon.

*Poor thing, need to use umbrella some more

These are other photographs that I managed to snap on that day.

-

-

-

-

*During the gospel reading, so long hor!

*so congested with people and cars

*Queuing up to kiss the cross, CAN'T even see the cross from here!

* Still queuing up - long way to go baby

*Ah finally, almost there! Patient now..

*The father ( that was serving mass on that day )
I have NO idea what's his name!

*a glimpse inside of the church

*Hey, that's Celine and hubby! Saw them too!
Looks like they also sit outside of the church ;p

----

Easter Day

Ah yes, this is a marking of the end of the Lent season. :D
Went to CMI for the English mass, BUT I DIDN’T KNOW IT’LL BE THIS PACK!
Imagine have to park the car super duper far. I think need to walk for 3-5 minutes from the church! Siao hor! Yes, need to stand OUTSIDE of the church AGAIN!

*Heaps of cars parked way far from the church

Here are some of the pics I took inside of the church.

-

-

-

-

*alot of people rite?

*I was trying to take the choir's picture, then suddenly..

*this guys was giving me the pandang slack ( like JW put it ).
Gosh! I'm NOT taking your picture la brother! Relax!

*this is the BEST pic i can take for the choir liao

Oh yeah, there was a bazaar going on in conjunction of Easter Day in CMI.

*The way to the bazaar!

*lots of people buying food

*food all the way

Guess who I saw helping out?

-

-

-

-

It's ALEX!

*Alex: DONT TAKE MY PICTURE LEH!

Well, you just got SNAPPED!

Maybe this might be a bit late but anyways,

What do you think?

If you think you can identify the difference between
digital photograph
and digital painting
Here is your chance to prove it!

Exibit A:
Damen Station on the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit Authority

Here is another close up!

Can figure this is a digital photograph or a digital painting yet?

No? Alrite, maybe you need more details on the picture, another close up.

Not close enough? Well, this might help.

Close enough gua?
Can see very detail liao lor!

Wanna know the answer?

-

-

-

-

-

It's actually

Digital Painting

Yes, it's true! Check out this site,
http://www.bertmonroy.com/fineart/text/fineart_damen.htm

This guy is Bert Monroy, he's what you call a photo-realist painter. People often asked him, why don’t he just take a photograph? He said, 'I’m not a photographer. To me, it is not the destination that is important—it is the journey. The incredible challenge of recreating reality is my motivation'. Go check his site and be amazed!

Prawn vs. Monkey

April 14, 2006 ( Friday )
Prawn vs. Monkey

It was Good FridayHappy Good Friday all! I’m gonna blog bout Good Friday in another post. As for now, I’m gonna blog bout food. I know I’m supposed to fast on Good Friday, BUT it was after the mass and I’m death hungry! Fast the whole day liao what!

So me and Eddy went to this place in Foh Sang to eat Prawn Noodle ( Cannot eat meat on Friday – BUT seafood can eat la! ) Since I haven’t tried the Prawn Noodle there yet I gave it a try. This will gimme the pleasure to rate the food and the diner there :D

Kedai Kopi Emas Helang
( Translate to English: Golden Eagle Coffee Shop )

Foooooooood , glourious fooooood! ( Suddenly I remembered this song from Ice Age 2, the vultures were singing this song! Hey, aint this song was in Oliver Twist too! )

Their main specialty was prawn. Prawn Noodle, Fried Noodle with Prawn and the other one I don’t remember already.

This is what I've ordered -
Fried Noodle with Prawn

This is what Eddy ordered -
Prawn Noodle

A sea of fried rolls

More fried food!

My Verdict:

Placeit’s clean, air-conditioned.. err, what else har?

FoodNot enough variety, strictly for those who likes to eat prawn, and more prawns!

Price Fair

RecommendationONLY for those who like prawn and prawn noodle!

--

Since we ONLY ate noodle, I’m still HUNGRY! So we decided to go to Brass Monkey ( in Lintas ) for dessert.

Welcome to the Land of the Monkeys!
Where everyone should act like monkey, eat like monkey and talk like monkey..
Err, gu gu ga ga ga ga ga!?

Nah, Brass Monkey has no REAL monkey in it ( just in case you were wondering la! ) BUT they do have ALOT of monkey pictures ( all drew & coloured by hand ) on the wall! See Exibit A.

Exibit A
A picture taken from the wall ( mind you this wall is BIG! )

I was snapping pictures in that place and one of the guy waiter THOUGHT I was writing a review for a magazine! I find it amusing, do I look like a writer? He even asked me to write GOOD STUFFS to promote Brass Monkey! LoL!

Food The food is pretty nice. Actually I been here before but I never blog bout it before!
